Concept

Every project starts with an idea. My idea for "The Guide" started as a daydream of sorts. Almost 4 years ago, I began the process of piecing the events of this story together in my head. It began with small images and scenes that melted together into moving scenes, and eventually a loose narrative was formed. It took another two years for me to finally decide to create something using this idea, so I began doodling. Characters, scenes, everything that was flowing through my mind came out on paper.

After some brainstorming and doodling, I nailed down the key parts of the story.

Two main characters: the young woman acting as a guide/angel/grim reaper figure, and the sickly little boy.

Two main settings: the dreary hospital and the exciting carnival.

The plot: Dying boy is given happy last day and a chance to say goodbye to his family.

Some of the key scenes from the early stages of the development process that have stuck with the story since it's inception can be seen below.

The Morning Scene
The Hospital Door
The Elevator
The Ferris Wheel

I wrote a very early script in early 2015. It has since expanded upon, but the bones of the story stayed the same.

More concept art was created for the settings, the main characters received character model and expression sheets, color schemes were created and tested, drawing and painting styles were experimented with. All of these little pieces and parts were tweaked until I was happy with the results.

Now that the story had it's base, it just needed to be put together.
